NUS Dance BLAST! is a member of NUS CFA. She was formed in September 2001.
Initiated by a group of students with a keen interest in Hip-Hop dance and guided by Resident Choreographer, Patrick Loo, the group aims to promote the Hip-Hop spirit to the wider community.
Of utmost importance is the Hip-Hop spirit – positivity in life, freedom and passion.
Guess what. I never ever expected myself to have plucked up the courage to go for Dance Blast! Auditions. As a newbie and a amateur in the dance arena, I’d always looked up to those who move their bodies so naturally and beautifully to music, esp, hiphop, the type of music that I personally identify with. Thanks to a good friend whom I call Riz, who eventually boosted my morale and encouraged me to go and pursue my dreams, instead of envying people from afar. One day before the auditions I decided, yes, just give it a try man. So I tugged one of my seniors whom I met during arts camp and we both gave it a try. Ha, who knew that would have sparked off a wonderful journey in my dance life in NUS.
Decked in the not-so-hiphop gear, I felt weird and out-of-place when I first went for free class, and subsequently, the auditions. I saw the seniors and I thought they were awesome people and they looked so cool. Was feel jittery all over just like some newbies, and after the auditions, I felt like sh*t. Really. Almost wanted to cry because I screwed it up so badly. The only moments that I felt proud of myself was perhaps, during the 2 8s of free-styling if I could vaguely remember. The day ended with me almost wanting to bang myself against the wall, haha. Depressive lah! Perhaps that was because that was my virgin attempt and it meant so so so much to me!
But few days later, a call from Ziyen gave me so much hope! Yeah, I was selected, although I don’t know why. On my way to the first class I met this boobsy girl, whom I had recognized from free class(aiks, she was standing in front of me), and I went up to say hi. That sparked off a new friendship and she became the first friend I found in blast! No prize for guessing who she is, cause she is the ALMIGHTY, boobsy, ELEEN. KUDOS to her and her williestong!!!
Anyway, that was my first impression of blast! people and that never did change abit, even until now. I love the way people are so warm and approachable. Its amazing how dance brings people from all faculties/all walks of life together and gels us with such amazing power. The bond, I don’t care if its covalent or what, is so powerful that people who are looking at us from the outside are going to envy us so much. Just because we’re a bunch of fun-loving people who comes together in the name of dance, just because we love to DANCE.
Remember during our anniversary celebration last year, I volunteered to perform, and since then, I have been under the guidance of our very beloved xiao, Jay T la, do the Jay walk, and now, its Dog watch. Ok, whatever, msn nicks he has. Haa. But yes. So grateful to xiao, and other seniors like calvin of course, whom I have had the chance to learn something from them. I don’t know, but I think seniors and alumni are the richest assets in BLAST! So I urge you guys to really, treasure them and BUG THEM!! I know its hard to get everyone attached to the club within such a short instance, but hey, guess what, SHUT UP & DANCE is coming, and that’s a chance I hope all of us will grab. That’s like a biannual event that I have been so blessed to be assigned to take charge of, alongside with dearest Grace, and the other comm members as well..
Just to keep you guys updated, Grace and me have been meeting Pearl so often, and Pearl has put in a whole lot of effort to make the concert work. For those who still do not know, Pearl is our cute and bubbly Group Manager from CFA. She is our beloved nanny who worries about our concert whole day long. I hope all of us realizes that Blast! is who we are today, not only because we have a whole lot of dedicated alumni, both current juniors and seniors batches, but also because we have a very dedicated group officer like Pearl. =) And of course, Mr Patrick Loo, our beloved Pat. Heh.
Yeah some background work has been on-going, but most importantly, in order for the concert to be a success, to be something that people will walk away saying “WOW, I didn’t know NUS Dance Blast! has such passionate and talented dancers! VERY IMPRESSIVE!”, it all boils down to our dancers.
Yes and by saying dancers, I mean, everyone of you who are currently working so hard, using CFA dance studio so often, or even the RR lah. =) I bet the choreographers can just camp in the dance studio, I mean ppl like Candy, I’dil (aye captain!), just to mention a few. Because the choreographers are working so hard, I think as dancers-in-the-making, we should give them our fullest support and commitment. It takes two hands to clap; for a concert to come together perfectly, it takes so many hands to clap, and so many hours of hardwork off stage. I bet all of you are feeling so tired and having muscle ache all over as you are reading this. Haa. If you are, good for you! Muscle ache means your muscles are growing ah, I think. Work the abs man!! Woohoo. To the fellas and the ladies out there, pls start conditioning yourself, we all wanna look good on stage! Okay on a side note (looking gd doesn’t mean dancing well.. so oh wells..haa sadness. who cares lah, just work it!)
For those who have had commitments and were previously unable to commit so much, I guess its time to catch up with the rest! Perhaps I should tell this to myself too. But yeah, its never too late yes. Counting down to the concert, we have 45 more days to our first day of concert. Hooray!!! Exciting!! =) I believe its time to really sit down and gauge if we are really on our way to putting up a flawless and impressive show on 8 and 9 September. By now I guess most of us would have been freed from the torturous holiday jobs yes, and of course ( to those who worked, you guys are now officially invited to give the rest of the blastards a treat ah!) Haa aight. Just needed to say something about having a sense of urgency, which I believe all choreographers are really feeling the stress now – simply because vetting day is next Weds, 2 August! Yes, so as dancers-in-the-making, let’s give our best shot during the remaining 45 days. Always ask for feedback from your choreographers, make effort to video down if you cant remember steps. Always ask when in doubt. This makes things easier as well yes?
Now we are still about one week away from vetting day, so guys, let us work harder, I know we will and we CAN make it. This may sound really crappy, but yeah, remember, Afterall we’re always there for each other. Do think about it, and make sure you turn up for every single practice that’s left of this 45 days. Lets just make it work, after all we are dancers-in-the-making! & at the end of the concert, we'll all feel so proud of ourselves simply because we're from NUS Dance Blast!
And yes, that is what OUR concert is all about, about young aspiring choreographers and passionate dancers who have chosen the path to pursue their dreams and interests, to those who dared to give it a try, and not to sniggle at one side, feeling sulky about those who can groove and show it all on stage. By showing it all I don’t mean baring your bodies (although xiao loves to do it =p) Yup. To sum it up, its all about dancers-in-the-making.
I guess this is getting too long, and i'm, too, dead beat after a whole day of work and dance. But, while dancing hard, I urge all of you to take good care of your health. Don’t forget simple things like bringing your knee guard yes. We don’t want bruised knees, (oh I don’t mean bruce lee) haa. And drink loads of water, get plenty of rest.. I believe DR welfare will be commencing soon, haha. Pls don’t curse me for such a long love-letter! It can’t be eaten, but at least, I’ve said my piece. Ha, so take whatever I’ve said with a pinch of salt, afterall, I’m still an amateur who needs loads of guidance. On this note, hope that we’ll all progress and improve alongside with each other, see you, my comrades, in the studio soon!
With truckloads of lovely hazelnut chocolates, Hazel Proud member of NUS Dance Blast! (aka Lil' P) (guess what P stands for? haha)
